How To Get Rid of Dry Scalp

If you've ever dealt with an itchy, flaky scalp, you know how challenging it can be to find relief. Whether your dome is itching, or the dandruff is already falling, understanding the root causes is the first step in choosing the right treatments. It’s a delicate dance, so that’s why we’re here to help.  

What causes dry scalp? 

Dry scalp can be caused by several factors (how fun!), ranging from environmental conditions to the products you use. Common suspects include: 

  • Weather changes: Cold, dry air in winter can strip moisture from your scalp, while the summer sun can dry it out. Similarly, AC and indoor heating systems can lower humidity levels indoors, compounding the problem.

Symptoms of dry scalp.  

Get ahead of the flakes. Watch out for these symptoms: 

  • Flakiness: Small, white flakes that are especially noticeable on dark clothing. 
  • Itching: Persistent itching is a classic sign of dryness. 
  • Tightness: The scalp may feel tight and uncomfortable. 
  • Redness: You may notice mild redness, indicating irritation. 

Dry scalp vs. dandruff: What’s the diff?

How to treat your dry scalp: 

  • Hydrating shampoos and conditioners: Look for products labeled “moisturizing” or “nourishing,” and avoid sulfates, which can strip moisture from your scalp.  
  • Scalp oils and serums: Tea tree oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil have moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties that soothe dryness and irritation. Simply massage a few drops onto your scalp, allowing the product to absorb before washing or leave it overnight for intense hydration.

  • Apple cider vinegar rinse: Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, apply to your scalp after shampooing, and rinse out after a few minutes. It can help balance the scalp’s pH and reduce dryness.

Preventative measures for dry scalp:
