what is beard balm

When you grow a beard, it needs regular attention. You have to groom it, style it, clean it, and care for it in general.

One thing that can really help you care for your beard is a good beard balm.

What is beard balm? How do you use it?

Today, we’re going to remove these mysteries and teach you a trade secret for beard care.

What is beard balm?

Let’s talk about what beard balm actually is. From a technical standpoint, it’s a styling treatment for your beard. It’s designed to moisturize and condition the hair on your face by infusing it with healthy ingredients and preventing dryness on your face and in your hair.

Beard balms can use a lot of different specific ingredients to these ends, but you’ll typically find a general moisturizing oil (similar to lotions but better suited for facial hair), a number of common nutrients, and a softening agent.

Overall, regular use of beard balm helps you style the beard, soften it, and make it look better in general.

What is beard balm supposed to do?

Considering what is in a beard balm, it’s not too hard to understand what the product is supposed to do. It’s designed to help you style your beard, keep it healthy, and make it as attractive as possible.

You can think of it as a combination of conditioner and styling gel. While it helps your beard stay healthy, it also helps you manipulate your facial mane so that you can keep your beard in order and not out of control.

Basically, it’s supposed to supplement your grooming and styling regime, providing an essential product that gives you more control over how your beard looks and feels.

We’ll get into how you can use it and how to fit it into a holistic grooming routine as we go. That will help you fully understand the potential of your beard balm and how to get the most out of it.

How do you use beard balm?

Generally speaking, you’re going to use beard balm as a styling product—even though it does more than just style the hair.

After your beard is clean (so typically after a morning shower), you want to put a light dollop on one of your fingers (usually your index finger). Keep that one finger in mind; it will help you measure a reasonable amount of balm to use.

Take the balm on your finger and rub it around in your palm until it starts to feel warm. At that point, you can use your hands to apply it to your beard. Work it into the beard. You want it to come into contact with all layers of your facial hair.

After you do, you can comb your beard and style it however you like.

To make sure you get the “dosage” right for your beard balm, it should soften the whole beard, but it should not make your hair glisten. For most beards, a small dollop is plenty, but as you get a larger, longer, and thicker beard, you might have to slowly add a little more. Also, because you’re committing to a whole regimen of beard care, it’s ok to go light on the balm. It won’t hurt you to hold back a little.

Fitting beard balm into a grooming regimen

Now you know how to apply balm to your beard, but you still need to fit it properly into your schedule. For the most part, you can break beard care into three categories: washing, cutting, and styling. The balm will fit into the third part, but it helps to really understand the whole process to know what you should and should not expect from your beard balm.

Wash

The first step in beard care is washing it. The easiest way to do this is in the shower. You can get specialized beard shampoos and conditioners. If you don’t have access to them, a good scalp shampoo and conditioner will suffice.

Beard hair is different from scalp hair, but the vitamins and nutrients in scalp products are still good for your beard. Most especially, a good conditioner will soften your beard.

All of this is to say that you can feel free to use Ultra Premium™ Shampoo and Conditioner to take care of your beard. Wash it regularly, and your beard will be full, healthy, and attractive.

Trim

Step two is trimming your beard. This doesn’t literally have to come between showering and styling in your morning routine, but that’s probably the easiest way to do it. Typically, you want to trim your beard when it’s clean. That said, it’s probably easier to do when your beard is dry.

In that case, the prototypical plan is to wash the beard in the shower. Dry it thoroughly. Trim it as needed. Then style it.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to trim your beard every day.

When you do trim, it mostly comes down to what kind of beard you’re trying to grow. At a minimum, you can trim errant hairs by brushing your beard up and away from your face. Then use scissors to clip anything that stands out.

If you need to use an electric trimmer or anything else, that’s all at your discretion, but you’ll be fine.

Style

Last up is styling. For this, you follow the directions we already provided. Add your beard balm (you can also use beard oil, but that will be a whole other post), and style your beard as you see fit. We don’t need to rehash this; we’re just showing you how styling fits into the equation.

Enjoy

That’s all you need to know. You can take great care of your beard, and you’re free to enjoy it moving forward. Have fun, you ruggedly handsome fella.
